SPAA Members' determination to rise to every challenge is rarely in doubt, and it was well and truly on show at Thursday evening's long anticipated Summer In The City event in Edinburgh. The handsome Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street played host to more than 270 members and guests - most resplendent in Great Gatsby attire (the theme for the evening this year). It's fair to say, a few of the costumes on display took a very broad view of 'The Great Gatsby' as a theme - they ranged from high comedy to ultra-chic - but the thought, effort and energy put into them was everywhere in evidence.
Event sponsors - headline sponsors Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Qatar Airways, Delta / Virgin Atlantic together with Travelport, Classic Collection Holidays, Edinburgh Airport and the Balmoral Hotel were, as always, generous in their support of 'the Summer Ball' and the SPAA Social Events team - Joanne Dooey, Gayle Gordon, Janice Hogarth, Irene Darracott and other colleagues - produced a superb and glamorous evening.
Rising to the challenge in record-breaking style, the assembled guest dug deep and donated a fabulous £4,500 to the SPAA's new designated charity - Mary's Meals, which now feed more than 1.2 million children daily in countries around the world. Watch out in SPAA Today and at www.spaa.org in the coming days for more on this fantastic two-year charity project. On the evening, June Chalmers (Travel Counsellors) was victorious in a competition related to the charity appeal, with Michael Bennett the runner-up (more on this story to follow soon).
From a very strong field, two worthy winners of the 'Best Dressed Guest' competition emerged - Linda Macdonald (RSSC) and David Sanderson (NCL), and in the Grand Draw for the evening's main prizes ...
Fred. Olsen cruises (Star Prize) from Rosyth were won by Marie Shevas of Moorelands Travel
